The Magic Flute

Farmhand Tamino travels to the realm of the Queen of the Night and pretends to be a prince from a faraway land. Together with his friend Papageno, who plays his servant, they relieve the local villagers of their cash. Because Tamino has a magical flute. As soon as he starts to play, everyone is forced to dance whether they want to or not, and while they dance Papageno can pinch their full money bags.

The Queen of the Night has also heard about the magic flute and has Tamino and Papageno brought to her castle. Both fully expect to be thrown in the dungeons for their crimes, but instead the queen makes them an offer: her beloved daughter, the Princess Pamina has been kidnapped by the rebel Sarastro and is being held prisoner in his fortress. The queen asks Tamino to use the magical power of the flute to free Pamina. In addition, they must bring back to her the amulet of the seven-fold sun circle, which Sarastro has unlawfully taken from her. In thanks, she offers Tamino her daughter's hand in marriage.

Despite Papageno's reservations, Tamino accepts the quest. If he brings the queen her daughter and the amulet, he can become a prince himself and escape his life as a farmhand. He is even prepared to put his friendship with Papageno on the line.

Meanwhile, at Sarastro's fortress, Princess Pamina is not prepared to wait to be rescued. Through her own cunning, she manages to escape and is immediately pursued by Sarastro's myrmidons.

She meets Tamino and Papageno in the nearby forest, and at first, they have no idea who the strange girl is, as she stands before them, covered in dirt and dressed in rags. Using the flute, Tamino manages to shake off Pamina's pursuers. As they get to know one another, he can hardly believe his luck and is already envisioning his future as a wealthy prince. He has no idea that Papageno's reservations were entirely justified and that the queen is double crossing them.
