The Berlin Wall has fallen, the Eastern Bloc has collapsed, the Stasi secret service has been stormed and disbanded. All the family members have to adapt to the new, chaotic situation in East Berlin and find new or old jobs in these turbulent times.

Unlike Falk, his father Hans wants to face up to his Stasi past. His wife and former colleague Gaucke are against it. Gaucke blackmails him with an old file containing a well-kept family secret. Falk, who’s been in a wheelchair since his gunshot wound, falls in love with physiotherapist Petra in the hospital, a firm opponent of communism, so he does everything he can to hide his Stasi past.

Martin lives with reporter Katja and his daughters in West Berlin, finding a career as a cabinetmaker amid the catastrophic collapse of the Communist East, trying to save the furniture company from bankruptcy. Vera joins the state Holding Company, wanting to help the country make the transition to a free market economy, and has to decide over Martin’s fate as well. Görlitz and Nicole seem to have it better, warming to each other privately as well. But on a vacation to Mallorca, their past catches up to them…
