The Romans were the first to turn the region between Nimes and Ardèche into a blossoming landscape: they built roads and ensured that there was enough water in their settlements. It was in this age that the Pont du Gard was built, an aqueduct that is now a World Heritage Site. It was part of an ingenious system that brought water to Nimes, a city where the traces of Antiquity are everywhere to be found. The Ardèche has become a popular holiday destination due its picturesque gorges, its caves and waterfalls.
