Ireland - green meadows, sheep, whiskey and its chequered history spring to mind. Hardly anyone connects Ireland with beautiful gardens, palm trees and an abundance of tropical flowers. And yet any number of these small paradises are to be found in the south-west of the island, where the Gulf Stream makes for a mild climate. Irish gardens are often secret places surrounded by hedges, walls and moats. Ireland's gardeners have always been "plant hunters", they invested a great deal of money and effort in the cultivation of foreign plants.  In the west of the island the ornamental gardens are still, to this day, located in the midst of a magnificent, unspoilt natural landscape. The film is a journey of discovery to very different horticultural paradises in the most surprising places in the south-west of Ireland.

Irland - das sind grüne Wiesen, Schafe, Whiskey und eine bewegte Geschichte. Kaum jemand verbindet mit Irland schöne Gärten, Palmen und tropische Blütenpracht. Und dabei gibt es diese kleinen Paradiese zuhauf im Südwesten der Insel, wo der Golfstrom das irische Klima mild macht. Irische Gärten sind oft geheime Orte, umsäumt von Hecken, Mauern und Burggräben. Irlands Gärtner waren seit jeher "Pflanzenjäger", sie investierten viel Geld und Mühe in die Ansiedlung fremdländischer Gewächse. Im Westen der Insel liegen die Ziergärten heute noch in grandioser ungezähmter Natur. Der Film ist eine Entdeckungsreise zu ganz unterschiedlichen Gartenparadiesen an den überraschendsten Orten im irischen Südwesten.
